Nothing apparently makes monogamy look better than a pair of beer goggles, according to a working paper out of the University of Leuven.
Economists Mara Squicciarini and Jo Swinnen started digging into the history of alcohol consumption in relation to marriage norms after noting that modern polygamous cultures such as parts of the Muslim world and Mormom fundamentalists abstained from alcohol. They found that when polygamous societies changed into monogamous ones, alcohol consumption started to rise.
Perhaps it's a survival instinct; anyone trying to juggle multiple spouses would be a fool to let their guard down for a minute.
