World, meet 1RXS J160929.1-210524—the first documented sun spotted outside of our solar system. And do you see that tiny orb above it to the left? That’s an orbitting extra-solar planet, making this photo the first one of its kind. The photo was originally captured in 2008, but David Lafreniere and his team at the Gemini Observatory were recently able to confirm their long-standing suspicions. This new (well, new to us) solar family is 470 light-years away from our cozy solar system.
